In 2011, Diana Kimball Berlin<\/a> launched a distributed mentoring movement.<\/p>\n She called it \/mentoring<\/a> \u2014 as in, yourwebsite.com\/mentoring \u2014 and hoped that, one day, it might become as common to every site as an ‘About’ page.<\/p>\n \u201cThe purpose of \/mentoring is to get people to essentially hang their sign out that they are open to mentoring. No need to wonder or ask,\u201d writes Roz Duffy<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re announcing to the world that they are willing to help others and will provide their time and thoughts to those who seek guidance in the areas that the mentor has established they have experience in.\u201d<\/p>\n Very few of the experiences I\u2019ve learned and grown from over the years would have materialized were it not for the people who guided, supported, questioned, and encouraged me along the way.<\/p>\n In an effort to pay that forward, I\u2019d be delighted to share what I\u2019ve learned with anyone who\u2019s interested in pursuing a similar path. If that\u2019s you, don\u2019t hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have.<\/p>\n Topics might include:<\/p>\n \u2013 Pursuing an unfamiliar career path.<\/em> I left business school more than two years into a four-year degree, decided to study something entirely different, and to this day have never felt as though I made the wrong choice. From that initial decision, I\u2019ve continued to shape my career through a series of what Molly Graham<\/a> has termed \u201cj-curves<\/a>\u201d: \u201ca risky career choice \u2026 where you bet that you can transfer the skills you currently have to a completely new environment.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2013 The value of living abroad.<\/em> I\u2019ve studied in four different languages at nearly half a dozen post-secondary institutions around the world. After moving across Canada for my first Master\u2019s degree and conducting my doctoral work as an international student in the US, I\u2019m excited to now be settling into life in Croatia.<\/p>\n \u2013 Deciding to go to grad school, apply for research funding, work in academia, or pursue a career in industry.<\/em> To-date, I\u2019ve been awarded over a quarter of a million dollars in funding for my research from top universities in Canada, the US, and the UK; taught classes at the university level to both undergraduate and graduate students; produced three successful, federally funded first-author grant applications; and signed a book deal.<\/p>\n \u2013 Navigating a significant career change.<\/em> Despite earning offers of admission to some of the top PhD programs in English literary scholarship in the world \u2014 to the University of Cambridge, for example, and to the University of Oxford \u2014 I chose, instead, to take a gap year after completing my M.A. at McGill University and to apply to a new set of PhD programs in an entirely different discipline.
